I'm a big fan.
My favorite comment about Spillane was by Kingsley Amis, of
all people. In some essay he rather controversially put
Spillane ahead of Chandler and Stout. Now, I don't buy
*that*, but his explanation was fantastic, something like
(paraphrasing):
"A depiction of an unappealing universe in no way diminishes
the talent of the creator of said universe."
Which I think is exactly right. In Spillane's best books,
anyway. You wouldn't exactly want to spend any time there,
but it's a fascinating vision.
