Re Fred's comment below:
> McGavin starred in the private eye series "Mike
Hammer" in the 1950s.
And even earlier than that he played George Harmon Coxe's
crime-solving photojournalist Jack Casey in a short-lived TV
version of CASEY - CRIME PHOTOGRAPHER.
And let's not forget his lead roles as the top operative of a
shadowy private outfit called "Manhunt International" in the
Edgar-winning TV movie BERLIN AFFAIR and as a seedy reporter
right out of THE FRONT PAGE another Edgar-winner, THE NIGHT
STALKER, which went on to spawn a short- lived TV series.
What may have been his last role was a cameo appearance in
the pilot for the recent revival.
He also was great at playing cops as in a TV-movie version of
Dorothy Uhnak's LAW AND ORDER, an episode of POLICE STORY
called "The Ripper," a low-budget crime film called THE CASE
AGAINST BROOKLYN, and a recurring role as the retired FBI
agent who looked into all the weird cases before Mulder got
the job on THE X-FILES who ran the . He even took over for
Dean Martin as rookie cop Jerry Lewis's Field Training
Officer in THE DELICATE DELINQUET when Martin & Lewis
broke up before filming started.
Great at villains, too. He'll be greatly missed.
