The shifts in what is considered realism is particularly
evident in TV cop shows. When it first aired, Hill Street
Blues was hailed for its realism, at least in part due to the
precinct's floors being dirty. But every few years, a cop
show gets more "real" -- NYPD Blues, Homicide, Shield, Wire,
etc. While the trappings may make them seem real, they're all
constructs. And that's fine with me. I want a story, and that
requires certain concessions, from trimming extraneous, not
very neat distractions to shaping the narrative.
