I've been reading recently about John Fante, a writer many
put in the first rank. Some say he does Los Angeles better
than anyone. Of course, you can find excessive praise about
nearly anyone. But I am intrigued by what I've read. Frankly,
I'd never heard of him until today when I bid on a tape of an
episode of "The Richard Boone Show" and saw him listed for
the screenplay credit.
I've ordered a copy of his 1940 novel ASK THE DUST, which has
a film version out next year from Robert Towne. He sounds
like an interesting writer and some of his work seems to fit
this list ( for example, he did the screenplay for "Walk on
the Wild Side").
Any opinions out there or recommendations of other works by
Fante?
