All right, I hate to agree with you tough young (American)
(male)
(Miker-ish) kids, but I've been saying this myself since
Episode One. And I'm not in agreement with those of you who
think it's somehow inauthentic. There are lots of people out
there on the streets of London today who use the word
"fucking" regularly and repeatedly in conversation; the word
still means "really",
"emphatically", sometimes (only sometimes, with the
middle-class schoolkids) plus "Ooooh listen to me I am SOOO
tough."
Sure - if your approach to history is Ladies Home Journal.
Sure - if you really think that history actually was nice and
well laundered. I liked SHANE - but it's awfully romantic.
...All those gentlemanly Westerns with attacking Indians and
wicked rustlers doing neat acrobatic flips off their
horses....
One of the annoying faults of historical movies/tv/novels is
that all those clean faces, those nice jackets, those
mouthfuls of white, straightened, dentist-approved teeth, are
RIDICULOUS. They intrude, they make me laugh. One of the
great things about the current BBC production of BLEAK HOUSE
(which you should check out when you get the chance: the
design is strangely Deadwoodish and there are fucking dozens
of good actors in it) is that the poor are all so wonderfully
dirty and sick.
And that's the thing about people living in Deadwood - or the
projects in Richmond Va: they are poor, and often sick, when
there's a storm (or hurricane) it makes you wet and dirty,
and existence is a real fight; and by the way, there aren't
any fairy godmothers with wands.
