Hi Gary-- I like He Who Hesitates because the the 87th
appears only peripherally and because the killer, driving
around with a body in a small refrigerator in the back of his
pick-up truck and worrying that his 70-something Mom will be
worried that her forty-something son will miss the bus back
upstate, is one of the strangest and most oddly compelling
characters McBain ever created. The second act is especially
good as the man wanders the streets of NYC and meets various
strange people as well as bewitching young black woman.
McBain shows us the streets of 1965 which today reads like a
time machine trip.
