George, I read these books because they're good fiction. Good
fiction swings, it presents a psychologically believable
situation in a stylized package that makes it more
interesting than the equivalent real situation. We've had and
have great storytellers and stylists in these genres, and
that explains why they hold our interest and we want more. I
don't feel any vicarious pleasure, and I've never
particularly identified with hardboiled or noir protagonists,
though I always root for Parker and I wanted the guy from The
Ax (new movie just out from Costa-Gavras, so I hear) to get
away with it. And I thought Maximum Bob was cool.
