Yes, I've read Firemaker recently.
I found his craftmanship quite excellent. The story was well
plotted. The crime scene in the park was downright chilling.
I had some trouble with the characterization of Margaret
Campbell. I found it unrealistic for her to be so much the
ugly American and so clueless about Chinese culture. I've
never even been there and new most of the tidbits that May
has her learning the hard way. In truth, it's probably not
unrealistic but, for me, it was irritating. It also seemed a
transparent effort to set her up to expand her
horizons.
Don't get me wrong. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and I
will be reading all of his work I can get my hands on.
