"Bad decisions, moral weaknesses, or simply broken psyches"?
Sound like classic "tragic flaws" to me.... And I DO think
that classic tragedy is also very much about doom. Besides,I
was not arguing that Lehane's description of noir was the
final word; I thought of it as another piece of the
puzzle.

in my opinion the best examples (and most
prevalent) of
noir involve the protagonist's bad decisions,
moral weaknesses, or
simply broken psyches than the whims of
fate.
