BLOOD MERIDIAN is a mythic quest. The contrast between his
florid style and the stark brutality of the action is
stunning. McCarthy has magic. It's everywhere in BLOOD
MERIDIAN, and peppered throughout his other works, the scene
at the blacksmith's in CHILD OF GOD, the visit to the witch
in SUTTREE.
Up until this novel, McCarthy was writing solidly within the
realm of literature. He has taken a considerable step
backwards with NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN.
My view on McCarthy's opening allusion to the gas chamber is
that it was written with full knowledge of its historical
breach.
