I had an odd experience today. I'm working near where I had a
summer job almost twenty years ago, and on my way to get
lunch today I walked along the central boulevard of
University Avenue, a major street in downtown Toronto.
There's a stretch where the middle part is itself about two
lanes wide; some of it is covered in grass and trees, some is
cement benches and paving stones, and there are some war
monuments. For the middle of a busy street on a hellishly hot
day, it's pretty pleasant.
I remembered sitting out there, on a day almost as hot, in
1988, completely engrossed in an early Spenser novel by
Robert Parker. I can't remember which one, and I don't have
it any more, but it might have been the first, THE GODWULF
MANUSCRIPT. I'd had a low opinion of the books because of the
TV series, but never actually read one, and when I did, I
loved it. I was really happy to find a series I could dig
into.
After that, I read several more Spenser books, and gradually
got sick of them. It's been over ten years since I read one
now, but whichever one I was reading in 1988, it grabbed me
hard. When the weather's cooled off a bit I'll take another
book by a new writer and so sit in the same place.
