I didn't say they were essentially
the same character, far from it. What I said was that over
the span of the thirteen Kelly stories Kelly evolved into a
character much closer to Dan.

When I took the final step to Dan Fortune, I used the last
Kelly story,
"Viking Blood" as the basis for ACT OF FEAR. A few years
later I used "The Dreamer" as the basis for SILENT SCREAM,
and a few years after that I rewrote the next to the last
Kelly story, "The Hero" into the Fortune story
"Eighty Million Dead."
Most of the other Kelly storties did not reallly fit Dan
Fortune---too light and tongue in cheek.
