Consider that nowadays a lot of "book reviews" are a rehash
of the publisher's press release... I am sure that some
reviewers have come to feel that they should be paid
*extra* to read the book.
Opposing and criticizing something one hasn't read or seen is
standard fare in zealotry, particularly as regards film.
These zealots usually start " No, I haven't seen the movie
and I have no intention whatsoever of seeing it, but [litany
of complaints and requests for banning it, threats of
boycotts, etc.]..."
