I've never heard that one before. Thornburg is probably my
favorite noir writer (along with Charles Willeford), but I
know very little about him. It seems that he had already left
Santa Barbara and moved to Missouri (where he lived for 5
years) by the time he started writing CUTTER AND BONE.
