I have nothing against lots of shooting in pulp stories and
novels. It's only when I can't understand what's going on
that I rebel... Forexample, I tried to reread Paul Cain's
Fast One and found it indigestible. I have never had that
happen with Hammett or Whitfield, for example, or Daly, for
that matter. There is a difference between bad and
incomprehensible.
By the way, I am now giving Chandler the treatment, and none
of his stories reads badly. I guess Blackmailers was a
beginner's exercise patterned after people Chandler
considered good (with reason).
Best,
MrT
