Hi, Mark, That's an interesting idea to actually assign a
gender reversal, but the assignment was more general, just to
pick a novel to use as a model, and analyze it, generally in
a quantitative manner: how many chapters, characters,
locations, how much scene in proportion to summary--some
other things I can't remember without finding my old notes.
Lolita and Catch 22 were two of the other novels chosen. The
Lolita had a reverse gender role also, and that manuscript
was eventually finished and agented, just missing
publication. I don't think Catch 22 was ever completed. We
had to turn in what would be a third of the book in one
semester, so by picking The Postman Always Rings Twice, I had
52 manuscript pages to write, whereas you can imagine the
length and complexity of the others. I was also obsessed with
Cain, and the idea of playing out the sex he couldn't at that
time was a major motivation. Although I'd give anything to
say as much in as few words as he could. Vicki
