Masterson's book was called BADGE OF EVIL. There may have
been a "movie edition" of the book that used the film title,
but TOUCH OF EVIL was not what the novel was originally
called.
I quite like Heston as Mike Vargas. Maybe Gilbert Roland or
Ricardo Montalbon (who'd played an Hispanic Boston cop in
MYSTERY STREET) would have been more appropriate choices, but
I think Heston did a fine job, maybe not as a Mexican, but as
a honest, dedicated, and somewhat self-righteous cop.
I think if he'd been designated as a Mexican-American rather
than a Mexican, there'd be fewer negative comments about his
performance.
