That was one of Hitchcock's early sound flicks and one of the
few spy movies he ever did where the hero was a professional
agent rather than some poor innocent schlub inadvertently
pulled into international intrigue.
It was adapted from a stage play which, in turn, combined
elements from several of the short stories in Maugham's
collection, ASHENDEN - THE BRITISH AGENT. These stories
fictionalized Maugham's own experiences with British
Intelligence during WW1.
************** Thank you for the information about the movie,
Jim. I've been picking up on a lot of old movies here
recently. I finally got to see Little Caesar all the way
through. I had seen part of it about a year ago but the copy
I had stopped a short ways into the movie. Edgar Robinson was
great in it.
On a different front, I picked up a used copy of Greene's THE
POWER AND THE GLORY. I read it many years ago and after
reading a couple by Greene a year or so ago, I thought I
might like to reread this one. To be honest, I don't remember
much about it, but I know it's got the infamous whiskey
priest in it. Maybe a vacation book.
