Just finished this one, which has been favourably mentioned
here many times, and it was like a breath of fresh air after
Out--until the last few pages.
The first couple of chapters seemed very familiar. I was
wondering if I had read the book before. But no, it was just
that the characters were similar to those in Hard Feelings or
Nothing Personal. I was reminded of Anne Beattie or Alice
Munro with their huge casts of semi-interchangeable
characters. (Sorry, Jason.) But they aren't really
interchangeable. They just share a background and habits and
aspirations: this is "white-collar noir," as it says on the
cover.
Jason Starr makes criminals of the most ordinary middle-class
professionals. And the plots have very dark twists and turns,
with very good endings.
Now I've read four of his books and still have a few to go.
Highly recommendable.
