Didn't mean to cast aspersions upon Vachss! I loved the earlier ones as much as I disliked the later ones.
 Although the Burke novels are dark, that one with the hired killer protagonist was the darkest thing I had ever read at the time. Was it STREGA?

I've declared before that Burke is the left-wing answer to Mike Hammer, mostly to a choir of guffaws.
