Interim comment:
After the first couple of chapters, Ross MacD finally dropped
the irritating metaphors. When a reader has to think about a
metaphor, it's little more than the author showing off.
It still took me a while to get into the book. I am on the
last third and I like him as an author a little better than
when I read about five in a row a few years back.
I still don't see him as part of any Pantheon though.
Chandler and Hammett stand head, shoulders, elbows and knees
above any other hardboiled writers--including Parker, Ross
and John D MacDonald.
My recent reading has taken John D. off the pedestal as
well.
