I wouldn't doubt it. At the time, I was a pretty strict
hardboiled PI guy and had not yet expanded my taste to non-PI
noir (for instance, I was unimpressed by, close to disliking
Killer Inside Me the first time I read it). That would come
just a couple years later when I read Cain's first four
novels.
Maybe I should add Sanctuary to my reread list. The recent
talk led me picked up Gatsby last night.
Speaking of revivals, I just watched Murder My Sweet, from
the new Film Noir box I got for Christmas. What a great,
great movie.
