Today I picked up a nice-looking copy of James Cain's BABY IN
THE ICEBOX and a comparatively recent reprint of Geoffrey
Homes's BUILD MY GALLOWS HIGH, with a picture of Mitchum on
the cover. Looking forward to both.
Today I listened to the Orson Welles/Mercury Theatre/Campbell
Playhouse radio version of Hammett's GLASS KEY. Crammed into
about 48 minutes of playing time, it played pretty well. Paul
Stewart (the butler in CITIZEN KANE) was very good as Ned
Beaumont, with the amazing Welles doing a fine job as Madvig.
At the end of the show, Welles relates a story about Hammett
in his P.I. days tackling the task of finding a stolen Ferris
wheel. It sounded apocryphal, but I'm not up on Hammett
enough to know if there's anything to it.
