In private Scorsese apparently refers to the film - not
fondly - as his
'Spielberg picture' - it was a co-production with Spielberg's
Amblin Entertainment. It was not a film that Scorsese was
keen to make but it was contractually owed to Universal
Pictures.
Let's hope that Scorsese keeps to his stated intention to
abandon $100m plus productions in favour of more adventurous,
lower-budget projects. But if you accord Scorsese the status
of an artist and see his earlier films such as TAXI DRIVER
and MEAN STREETS as personal statements, then, thirty years
later, you must be ready for different films, not TAXI DRIVER
redux.
