Not part of the Macdonald quote, but it is part of Algren's.
This paragaph of advice is in the middle of a several page
monologue by an old con:
"But blow wise to this, buddy, blow wise to this: Never play
cards with a man called Doc. Never eat at a place called
Mom's. Never sleep with a woman whose troubles are worse than
your own. Never let nobody talk you into shaking another
man's jolt. And never you cop another man's plea. I've tried
them all and I know. They don't work." (p. 312 in the Penguin
edition)
Walk on the Wild Side was published in 1956 When is Tallulah
alleged to have said it? And was it in a movie or "real
life"?
I must admit that the quote sounds timeless, probably
predating both of them.
