I don't think Chandler or Hammett would have much affinity
for Macdonald's plots.
The other day, a weird thought struck me: how Macdonald's
work seems related to that of Josephine Tey, who herself
bears no literary relation to Hammett or Chandler (or to any
American crime author that I can think of). I can easily
imagine Macdonald writing the story of Brat Farrar, or the
story of The Franchise Affair.
