Miker asked, so here goes:
The Shaggy-dog story is one that goes on and on wity no
particular point.
The original shaggy dog story was a joke--that to most who
sit through it do not think it is very funny, but it gives a
helluva rush to the teller.
It begins with a guy losing a shaggy dog and someone is hired
to find it. The searcher goes here there and everyplace
looking for it. At each place he goes, he has just missed
finding the shaggy dog. When the teller finally comse to the
conclusion, he usually finds the shaggy dog at some exotic
location like a Tibetan Mountain Top. The punch line is, "You
know, that dog wasn't so shaggy."
The SDS is a long story with no particular point.
