I read Sucker Bet by James Swain (2003) recently. It is the
second (I think) in a series about casino consultant Tony
Valentine. He goes around figuring out how customers and
employees are defrauding gambling establishments. I really
enjoy reading about ingenious ways to cheat. Not that I would
ever try them. The first in the series is called Grift Sense,
and I've got that lined up as my next read.
Anyway, I was struck by an anecdote in which Tony relates
that one time he had to track down a missing man, who turned
up several years later, living in a similar town on the same
coast, with a similar car and wife to the ones he'd left when
he disappeared.

remember where I read it. Something very similar. Didn't
someone else lift that story, or did Hammett recycle it from
somewhere else. I'm almost certain I've seen this somewhere
other than THE MALTESE FALCON.
