Just finished Russell James's SLAUGHTER MUSIC. It's been
highly praised here but I could find nothing to admire in it.
I found the story itself to be uninteresting. I thought the
characters were uneven and unconvincing. He concentrated on
Hawk and Al's wife and left other important characters in the
shadows. I thought his movement into the past of Hawk and
Al's wife to be ineffective. I found no grace, no beauty, in
James's style. The ending was uninspired.
I'm really at a total loss to think of anything I liked about
it. When I think of the greats in hardboiled and noir that
I've read, I find nothing in James's novel that compares
favorably.
