A few weeks ago there was a brief mention on this list how
Cold Mountain could be considered noir. For some reason I was
thinking of Cold Mountain today, and it kind of hit me that
there are strong parallels between it and Homer's The
Odyssey. Anyone else see that also?
********** Well, now you make me feel illiterate for not
having read THE ODYSSEY. <grin> I got through THE ILIAD
but haven't made it to sequel yet. COLD MOUNTAIN is a strong
candidate for the noir title, especially considering the
ending. There is a strong thread of pessimistic determinism
running through the novel, a recurring theme in a lot of
noir. A powerful and moving novel. I have been patiently
waiting for the author (Frazer?) to come out with something
else.
