SHOEDOG is the worst novel by Pelecanos I read. I really
didn't like it at all and I didn't read other novels by
Pelecanos for years because of that (I finally changed my
mind about further reading, mainly because later
recommendations on this list). I remember when I red it some
years ago I had the feeling of a
"book-direct-for-movie" (type of mystery books that some
publishers like to ask from beginners and other authors to
minimize their risks...) but here Shoedog seemed like it was
pushed to the extreme of preparation for that goal.
I was right at least for the "script" feeling. I read much
later in an interview with Pelecanos that Shoedog was
originally a script that was rejected by producers and that
Pelecanos modified to publish it as a novel. The
modifications must have been minimal and the result is an
awful HB/noir novel, unbalanced and pointless.
