There was a live TV version, run as the first episode of a
suspense anthology series called CLIMAX, in 1954.
It starred Dick Powell, who, of course, was the first
film Marlowe and the first radio Marlowe. Thus he became the
first TV Marlowe as well.
Altman, however, may not even have been aware of it.
