Mark,
If you like Hell of a Woman and Pop. 1280, you won't be
disappointed with Savage Night. Also, I highly recommend The
Getaway. if you've only seen the movie, read the book! The
ending was sanitized by Hollywood (although they probably had
no choice). The Getaway has one of the most ludicrous,
fiercest, and apocalyptic endings of any of Thompson's book.
While not in the psycho-noir category, it's one of his best.
I also liked Thompson's two more literary efforts, while
dark, not really noir: Now and on Earth and Heed the
Thunder.
I also strongly recommend Rex Stout's How Like a God. This
could be the first psycho-noir book written. All the lurid
craziness that you'd expect from Thompson, but by Rex Stout
some 20 years earlier.
