Re the big lesbian surprise, without spoiling the
novel by naming it, didn't Spillane, whom Browne once
rewrote/edited, beat him to it?
Browne's best novel, arguably, is "A Taste of Ashes." About
as close to Chandler as you can get, which may be why Browne
and Chandler, though approximate neighbors in La Jolla, Ca.,
didn't get together too often for cocktails.
