Nope, that's from "The Fairy Chessmen" (ASTOUNDING, Jan.
& Feb. 1946)/CHESSBOARD PLANET/THE FAR REALITY, sometimes
credited to Lewis Padgett or Kuttner & Moore. Great stuff
all the same. Best first sentence in an SF book ever,
IMO.
"Private Eye" (ASTOUNDING, January 1949) has been
anthologized often, and is in the Kuttner collection LINE TO
TOMORROW AND OTHER STORIES.
