Jack, do you really think of Falcon as having a happy ending?
While not really doomed, it's bittersweet at best -- Spade
has just chosen duty over love (granted, a screwed up love
that would have led to doomed noir if he had pursued it -- as
a matter of fact, there's a book, what happens after a PI
runs away with the femme fatale he was supposed to turn over)
and sits in his office hiding from Archer's widow.
