Kerry, I am sorry to see you bring up the old "relevance"
thing, a war-horse of the sixties (though perhaps you give it
a new sense).
Why should the work of a crime writer be "relevant" to a
particular social problem? I say leave that to the help
industry--unless there's a good crime story in it, of
course...
By the way, I am not complacent . I don't care whether an
author is young and starting out or a long-dead pulpster.
It's the work that counts, and if you want to talk
about
*literary* relevance, now that's hard to predict.
