Thanks! It's a work in progress. I am a doctoral candidate at the University of South Florida. I hope to finish this year. Then, perhaps you will eventually find my dissertation published in book form at a university press near you! At least I hope so. It'd make tenure a lot easier....

 I don't think that the story reference is to Maupassant; William Marling suggests that it's more likely a reference to Somerset Maugham's "Mr. Know-all." If you've never read Marling, I think he's perhaps the best literary critic of the genre.
