I, too, would like to thank you, Mr. Sallis, for all the
great insights into the genre, for the heads-up on several
authors that I was unfamiliar with, and most of all for the
great books you've written. I learned a lot about Goodis,
Thompson, and Himes from your DIFFICULT LIVES, and I can't
think of anything I've ever read that hit as hard as the
first few pages of LONG-LEGGED FLY.
I do have another question for you. I'd like to know why you
chose a black protagonist for your Lew Griffin series. My
guess would be that Himes's influence was a strong
determinant.
