I've never turned a story into a novel, or even tried, but
the SF writers used to do it all the time (and maybe they
still do). Many a story that turned up in the digests in the
1950s would eventually show up as half of an Ace Double or in
some other novel form. In the mystery field recently, Joe
Lansdale's Edgar Winner THE BOTTOMS started out as a novella
in Al Sarrantonio's collection 999.
