A month ago I picked up a bunch of used books for free after
a charity sale. Among them were Lawrence Block's _The
Specialists_ an ultrahardboiled novel that I had overlooked.
It is a concise, powerful book.
The other is MichaelCollins's _Chasing Eights_, a Dan Fortune
PI novel that reminded me of Ross Macdonald: a lean but not
dry style, a vivid portrait of Santa Barbara and its fauna, a
complex plot handled with savvy assurance, and a whole that
adds up to much more than these ingredients. I highly
recommend it. It may be one of the best PI novels of the
nineties.
Best regards,
Mario
