I believe this title is the first in the PI Ben Perkins series. I just happened across it in the crime/mystery section of a used bookstore and he was on my list (derived from suggestions here, of course). But it's been a terrific read thus far: funny, vigorous storytelling, good pacing.

There are things I like about the first books by authors, including George Pelecanos, Bill Pronzini, and Ross Macdonald. That doesn't detract from my joy in reading their later stuff by any means but there's a certain edginess and raw quality that others here have described better I can.
