I don't know the circumstances of his life, but as one whose
family springs on one side from those coal-mine-riddled
hills, the self-destructive tendency is not exactly uncommon.
(Nor in the granite-quarry-riddled hills of Vermont the other
side springs from. Human condition plus just so much
bleakness alternating with stark beauty, perhaps.)
