I don't think Marlowe ever mentioned his home town in any of
the novels or stories.
However, in a letter Chandler wrote that includes a
mini-biography of Marlowe, he states that his character is
from Sonoma County, a rural area in the northern part of the
San Francisco Bay Area.
FWIW, in that same later, he said that he imagined Marlowe as
looking a lot like Cary Grant. Talk about inappropriate
accents!
