I'm going to pass on the question of whether Leonard is in
Chandler and Hammett's league other than to say, of course
not.
However, Jim, from which period were the crime books of
Leonard that you read. If they're later books, you may want
to give his early ones a try. I lost interest in Leonard
several books ago, but his first 5-10 crime novels, most of
which are set in Detroit or Florida are very good.
