Two authors mandatory on such a list are Peter Temple (he's written a PI series featuring Jack Irish plus standalones, one of which, In the Evil Day, is the best thriller I've read in years) and Marshall Browne (his two-book-strong Inspector Anders series, featuring a terrorist-tracking Italian policeman).
