Erle Stanely Gardner, The Case of the Drowsy Mosquito
(1943)
Perry Mason and trusty Paul sort out a mining scam and a
mysterious murder. Della Street helps. A good deal of the
action takes place in the California desert, which Gardner
was obviously very familiar with. Someone mentioned recently
he'd written nonfiction on the subject, I think.
Crusty old prospectors, suspicious employees, untrustworthy
relatives, and quite a few fast legal manoeuvres with
documents being signed, hidden, found, and so on, make for a
very satisfying read.
