 Rationing in the U.S. would have been over in 1949, although housing was still tight. The book was probably written earlier--there was some paper rationing during the war.
    I understand that British rationing continued well into the 1950s.

Joy, old enough to remember when oleo was lard white and came with a dye packet to color it like butter, but too young to have directly experienced rationing
