maybe BLOOD ON THE MOON, the first of the Lloyd Hopkins
trilogy. Hopkins is a contemporary L.A. sheriff's detective,
who does all the things all the bad cops do in his later
work. in fact, I would call Hopkins Ellroy's archetypical
