It isn't about prose style. It is as Kerry says, the ideas,
and the execution of the ideas. Yes, Chandler wrote beautiful
sentences. But the reason he's remembered today is not for
that ability, but rather for creating an archetype which
resonates to this day. And part of what makes Ellroy great is
that he's creating his own archetypes, in his own
image.
